Leaving from Tauranga?
Head north out of Tauranga on SH2 head past Katikati onto Waihi. Visit the Waihi Gold Discovery Centre and learn about the past and present gold story. Visit the Waterlily Gardens to see the beauty of this place with 20 ponds and gorgeous grounds.
Go left and head inland, stop at Waikino Station cafe or Falls Retreat at Karangahake Gorge for a break. Take the time for a walk or even a cycle in the gorge. Short or long options are available so plan in advance. The gorge is filled with old mining relics, streams, ferns and Owharaoa Falls. It’s a great place to stop. But ensure you have a flashlight.
A great family attraction in this area is the Bullswool Farm the kids will love it, and the parents too!
Head onto Paeroa and stop for the iconic picture of the L & P soft drink bottle. This town is also known as the “antique capital of New Zealand” with its many stores so check out to see if you can get a bargain. Continue on SH26 to Kopu then right onto SH25A. Up and over the hills for about 40 minutes then you will come back onto SH25. You could go right on Hikuai Settlement Rd into Pauanui Beach for a look around, approximately a 10 minute drive. With its 3km coastline its popular for long strolls, surfing (lessons available) & swimming.
Leaving Pauanui you will go through Tairua where you could make a cafe stop if you like and then up over the Tairua hill, through Whenukite and Coroglen and Whitianga is only 10mins away.
