Travelling from:

New Chum beachHead south out of Auckland, your escape starts as you turn off SH2. Perhaps take a chilled out day with some stops enroute. Head along the Hauraki Plains. Maybe take a break and divert to Ngatea Watergardens or Blueberry Orchard (December to February). Continue on and cross over the Kopu Bridge. Head left at the roundabout continuing on SH25 into Thames the old mining town rich in history. Continue north on the coastal road to Coromandel Town. A detour off the main road at Tapu for a lunch stop perhaps is highly recommended – Koru at Rapaura Watergardens (please note this is closed for winter season). This route is scenic as the coast is lined with Pohutukawa Trees. Photo stop opportunity as your descend into Coromandel Town at Kereta Hill.

Coromandel Town had New Zealand’s first gold strike and its historical buildings remind you of this era. Take some time to wander around or head out to the Driving Creek Railway for a great experience with a great story. Back in the car, continue up and around the coast and in about an hours time you will find yourself in Whitianga as you drive past Matarangi, Kuaotunu & Wharekaho Beaches.

If you are looking for one more thing to do on your way to Whitianga, at Te Rerenga go left and head to Whangapoua Beach. There is a short 30 minute walk into the unspoilt New Chum Beach. Don’t forget your camera. It will take you about 40mins from Whangapoua Beach to get you to your accommodation at Crow’s Nest Apartments.

Hot Water BeachHead north out of Tauranga on SH2 past Katikati onto Waihi. Visit the Waihi Gold Discovery Centre and learn about the past and present gold story. Visit the Waterlily Gardens see the beauty of this place before back onto SH25. Continue through Whiritoa, then onto Whangamata. A great place to break the trip. Good coffee from Port Road Project or lunch at sixfortysix. There is a stunning 40m waterfall just south in Wentworth Valley if you have time.

Continuing on SH25/Tairua Rd with the river on your right. You’ll come into the pretty seaside village of Tairua which is a great place to stop. Let the kids out at the park for a run around or bite to eat at one of the many eateries. Back on the road there is a great photo opportunity at the top of Pumpkin Hill. Continue driving and head into Whenuakite with the turn off to the iconic Hot Water Beach on your right. Something special and unique is available here all year round. Pack a spade or buy/hire locally and you can create your own spa pool in the sand! Time it right (two hours either side of low tide) and the right beach location.

Next is Hahei an idyllic beach set in a marine reserve. Its the gateway point to the famous Cathedral Cove. Only accessible on foot or by boat (Cathedral Cove Water Taxi – weather permitting). A “must visit” site. Beautiful snorkelling or diving opportunities plus amazing coastline photo shots. Maybe a drink from the local craft brewer The Pour House.
Back onto SH25 and travel about 20 minutes and you’ll arrive in Whitianga. We would recommend you base yourself for at least 3 nights to do justice to the region with all its attractions and sites to see.

Shakespeare Cliff LookoutHead out of town on SH26 to Morrinsville, via Te Aroha then onto Paeroa. Recommend a stop here for that iconic picture of the L & P soft drink bottle. This town is also known as the “antique capital of New Zealand” with its many stores so check out to see if you can get a bargain. Continue on SH26 to Kopu then right onto SH25A. Up and over the hills for about 40 minutes then you back onto SH25 through to the seaside village of Tairua. Tairua can be a good place to stop and recharge the batteries before heading over the Tairua hill on to Whitianga. Grab a coffee and have a little play at the park.
Back on the road and up over the Tairua hill, stopping to get a photo at the top of Pumpkin Hill before continuing on and arriving in Whenuakite. If you are looking for a little walk before arriving in Whitianga, turn right at the turn off just after Whenuakite and head into Cooks Beach.

Cooks Beach a historically significant area with Captain Cook anchoring in this long sandy bay in 1769. This area offers bush tracks with awesome views, Shakespeare Reserve, Flaxmill Bay, Front Beach, picturesque Lonely Bay & ferry landing (the oldest wharf in Australasia, built in 1837) where you can take a quick harbour ride to Whitianga (passenger ferry only). If you are not in a hurry, be sure to check out Mercury Bay Estate for wine tasting, cellar door sales or dining.

Head back to the Whenuakite turn off and travel about 35 minutes and you will arrive in Whitianga. The local town of the area where we would recommend you base yourself for at least 3 nights to do justice to the region.

This is our 2nd visit to Crows Nest in Whitianga, and will definitely come again. Close & convenient to all amenities (we walked everywhere we needed), and very helpful staff. When coming to Whitianga, you need to have this place on your list.
